I was feeling tender when we made this record, so there aren’t a ton of crazy vocal moments like on Good Guys/Bad Guys. But when we started playing “Heavenly One” live, the song revealed an opportunity to me, and I felt ole girl come out.
As a dreamer of impossible things, I initially wanted to shoot the performance in an empty restaurant. Max, Kes and I went back and forth on it, but ultimately, we were limited by acoustics. I wanted to go full band, full voice, with a choir, and most restaurants aren’t treated to handle that kind of sound.
Luckily, imposing parameters is very good for creativity. We brought the band to Mixart Studio. Kes mapped out a beautiful one-take shot, complete with lighting cues by Surf Spot Moderne, brimming with movement and emotion. I was stunned by the beauty in the simplicity.
It took a ton of planning to execute the video and performance. I have never been more pleased with a project, ever. It was a long day, but the magic between pals and pros was there (and so was pizza). I sang the way I feel I am meant to.
I am THRILLED to premiere this live session on YouTube April 9th at 9pm. I’ll be hanging out in the comments to chat, so click “Notify me” if you’d like to join the party :)
